Paula Martyr

Paula Martyr is a Bradford on Avon–based illustrator and maker working across mixed media. Alongside her original artwork, she creates a range of characterful pieces including her popular “teacake” cats and dogs, as well as cards.

With over 40 years’ experience as a children’s book illustrator, particularly in early reading schemes, Paula brings a playful, narrative quality to her work. Cats often make an appearance, reflecting a long-standing personal motif that runs throughout her practice.

She works from a well-loved, book-filled art room, where drawing and making are part of a daily, intuitive process. Her work balances humour and warmth with a distinctive illustrative style.

Paula’s proudest achievements include having her first picture book accepted for publication in the 1980s and, more recently, exhibiting work in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
