Alan Hemming
Alan Hemming is a potter whose work is rooted in the traditions of functional pottery. Working in robust stoneware, he creates mugs, bowls, jugs, plates and clocks designed for everyday use, with an emphasis on durability, weight and practicality.
Thrown on the wheel, his forms often retain the marks of making, giving each piece a direct, honest character. His glazes tend towards earthy tones, with splashes of bright red or dark blue, complementing the work's solidity and connection to daily use. His mugs are especially popular, generous, sturdy pieces made to be used and relied on.
Alongside his functional ware, Alan also produces highly glazed ceramic apples and pears, offering a more playful, decorative contrast within his practice.
